One thing I've always tried hard to do was look at the facts. Some of this came from growing up the liberal in a conservative family. Some came from being a shop steward and a union officer. There are a lot of lying supervisors but you want to have your facts straight when you go into a discipline hearing. Someone else's ass is on the line, not your general belief system.
While you wouldn't know it from reading my blog, I've spent much more time over the last year reading and writing on the web about the Duke lacrosse alleged rape case. At first it was a horrid fascination to imagine a group of privileged young, white men presume to think that they could do what was claimed and get away with it. Soon, as facts about the case came dribbling out, it became clear that the accuser was lying and that the DA was making a false prosecution and hyping it in the Durham media in order to get himself elected to the position to which he had been appointed.
The thing that has been most distressing to me has been how many self-appointed spokespeople of the Left have presumed the players' guilt based on their race, class and gender. They not only have presumed it, but have gleefully decided to remain ignorant of the case. The present case is Amanda Marcotte at Pandagon.
What is more troubling is that Marcotte has been named something like "official blogger" or "blogger-in-chief" or something with John Edwards' Presidential campaign. I like John Edwards and I think that someone who is so censorial (she's busily deleting comments over at her blog from people who disagree with her) and fights so hard to remain ignorant about something like this criminal case in order to continue to believe something either doesn't trust her beliefs or is afraid of the facts. In any case, I don't think that she's going to help Edwards.
The sad thing is that we probably agree on most things. The problem is that she seems to need making this case something iconic to prove a greater point when it doesn't fit into their world view. If you can't grant humanity to some people, then your stinginess affects how you handle the rest of humanity.

In any case, the sun is out and I'm going to take a hike up in the hills now.

Bob, I've been reading your posts on LS and TL...I didn't realize you had your own blog! While you and I will never see eye to eye on a number of polictical issues, I appreciate your writing and your POV. Keep posting and I'll keep reading. ;)
