I had one of those Netflix deadends for awhile. First, it was "The Beaver", which sat around the house for a couple of weeks until I saw it and was pleasantly surprised at how good it was. Then "The Departed" arrived. It sat around. Last night I had so little energy or ambition that I figured, pop it into the DVD player or send it back. I popped it in.
This is a truly violent guy movie. It's basically about a cop who infiltrates an Irish gang in Boston and a cop who is on the take from same mobster (played sleazily to perfection by Jack Nicholson). The two cops are Leonardo diCaprio and Matt Damon. It was actually a suspenseful movie, very much keeps you on the edge. Good doesn't triumph but neither does evil. Lots of blood. Lots of betrayals. Lots of lowlifes cussing. Alec Baldwin was in it too, and I'm still not sure if he was a good guy or a bad guy, but he was unpleasant too.
I'm not sure why it took me so long but I'm sure my former girlfriend's squeamishness about violent movies probably played a part (although I managed watch the entire "The Sopranos" and "The Wire" series while she was out of the room).
But it was a very good movie. I give it a Bob's thumbs up for violent guy movies.
Whew.
